Abstract | NGC 5194/5 was observed in the 21-cm hydrogen line with the 300-foot and 140-foot telescopes at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory. For an adopted distance of 4 Mpc, an H I mass 9.2 x 108 e is obtained. This hydrogen is associated with M 51 through its distribution and motions. Little H I is found in NGC 5195. The total mass calculated for M 51 is 1.6 x 10i0 e A model-fitting technique was used to estimate the position angle and systemic velocity of M 51 and the parameters describing a rotation curve of the Brandt form. The H I results are compared with optical studies of the luminosity distribution and the kinematics of M 51. The motion of NGC 5195 with respect to M 51 is discussed briefly.
