Abstract | The authors have made a neutral hydrogen survey of 28 faint elliptical galaxies using the 305 m antenna of the Arecibo Observatory. Eleven galaxies were detected, with 4 of them showing strong H I emission. The authors find a correlation of H I line width with blue luminosity, similar to the Faber-Jackson relation. They discuss the variation of physical conditions with luminosity that is likely to produce a high rate of H I detection in low-luminosity ellipticals. In the context of a simple wind model, the variation of heating and cooling times scales predicts significant accumulation as the result of stellar mass loss in the low-luminosity systems. |
