Abstract | CCD photometry for the star clusters E2 and E3 is presented. Data for E3 are compared with other CCD photometries. Turn-off points are observed and main sequences are followed for about three magnitudes in both clusters. The C-M diagrams are rather different: E3 is a very star-poor globular cluster at (m-M)0 ≡ 14.2. E2 closely resembles the galactic cluster NGC 2158. It is thus identified as an open cluster about 2 Gyrs old in the halo of the Large Magellanic Cloud. The distance modulus is (m-M)V = 18.5±0.2; assuming a reddening E(B-V) = 0.06, a distance of 46±5 kpc is obtained. The possible presence of gaps in the E3 C-M diagrams is briefly discussed in connection with stellar evolutionary theory. A group of possible blue stragglers and the intrinsic broadening of the E3 main sequence are briefly commented on. |
