Abstract | Five compact galaxies or galaxies with compact parts have been observed with the 21-cm line of neutral hydrogen. For the first time one, and possibly three, were detected. Their hydrogen mass and hydrogen mass to light ratio are comparable to those of late type galaxies. The apparent velocity dispersion of the neutral hydrogen is an order of magnitude smaller than the velocity dispersion measured for the stars in other compact galaxies. From an upper limit set on the neutral hydrogen extent of one of them (11 Zw 40), an upper estimate of its total mass is 1010 solar masses. Key words: galaxies - compact galaxies - radio radiation - 21-cm radiation - neutral hydrogen |
