Abstract | Summary. The 21-cm neutral hydrogen line has been measured for the first time in eleven non-Seyfert Markarian galaxies, with the Nancay radio telescope. From their optical brightness, they are compact galaxies or intermediate between compact and normal galaxies. The H i masses and indicative total masses exhibit very wide ranges of values and the relative H i content shows that they are not a homogeneous group. Ma 5 appears as an exceptional object because of its relative richness in hydrogen. The possible detection of a secondary line in Ma 201 may be connected with the ejection of a large mass of neutral hydrogen from this disrupting-like galaxy. Key words: Markarian galaxies - neutral hydrogen - 21-cm radiation - peculiar galaxies |
