Abstract | Observations were made of active and interacting galaxies, mainly drawn from Markarian's lists, in the H I 21 cm line with the Arecibo telescope. It is found that Markarians all have high M(H I)/L(B) ratios corresponding to Sc-galaxies. The six observed Seyfert galaxies have a spread in M(H I)/L(B) similar to spiral galaxies in general (counting also MRK 348 from Bieging and Biermann, 1977). Some interacting galaxies have H I profiles with very extended wings; high sensitivity and a straight baseline is required to detect more such wings. Using earlier model calculations for galaxies (Biermann, 1976; Biermann and Fricke, 1977), it is shown that Markarian galaxies have enough gas to sustain several strong bursts of star formation without seriously depleting their gas. |
