| Abstract | New observations using the Arecibo telescope have failed to detect intergalactic intracluster H I in the Coma Cluster. This represents a factor of two improvements over our previously reported limit (Wright et al., 1974) and makes it less likely that the cluster can be dynamically bound by H I. The highly flattened, rapidly rotating, extremely dense, cold H I clouds permitted by the observations will not evaporate over the cluster lifetime, but violate global stability criteria and hence cannot provide the missing mass in the cluster. |
