Abstract | Summary. Infrared magnitudes and 21-cm velocity widths have been measured for a sample of galaxies in the Fornax and Grus clusters. The Tully-Fisher relation for Fornax is very well defined and yields a distance modulus of 31.01 i 0.20. For Grus, the relationship is looser (the internal motions of the group not being fully separated from the Hubble flow), with a derived mean modulus of 31.11 i 0.28. If we neglect the deceleration of the clusters by the Local Supercluster, their distances and redshifts are consistent with an infall motion of the Local Group towards the Virgo cluster of 180 + 80 and 280 + 120 km i, respectively. Correction for this deceleration would increase these values by approximately 40 per cent. |
