Abstract | Peak optical H I absorption depths of 10% are found in a neutral hydrogen emission-absorption study of the active-nucleus Irr II galaxies NGC 520, 5363, and 5506. It is suggested that the absorption is due to a few standard clouds within several hundred parsecs of the nucleus, in the narrow-line emission region. The width of the absorption features is interpreted as being due to random motions of the gas within the absorbing clouds, in contrast to the large widths of the emission features that are due to the overall rotation of the galaxy. |
