Abstract | H I line observations are used to investigate the dynamical stability of a small group of spiral galaxies in the Coma/A1367 Supercluster. Located 12° southwest of A1367, the IC 698 group is one of the smallest systems that have been observed in this supercluster. The group appears well isolated from other galaxies and has a surprisingly small velocity dispersion, only 46 km s-1. It has a negative total energy, satisfying the conditions for gravitational stability. Application of the virial theorem gives a mass of the group which is comparable to the sum of the individual masses within the photometric radii of its galaxies. The virial mass-to-light ratio of the group is in excellent agreement with the M/LB ratio of high-luminosity spiral galaxies (M/LB ≡ 5 solar units). Large-scale photographs are also presented in order to obtain reliable Hubble types for each member of the group. |
