Abstract | The southern spiral galaxy NGC 300 has been searched for variable stars. Coordinates and finding charts are given for 34 variables. Most are Cepheids, but also included are three red supergiants and two eclipsing variables, as well as a few objects whose light variation can not yet be classified. For the purpose of estimating their magnitudes, faint photometric sequences have been set up in V and B which extend to 21m.7 and 22m.5, respectively. Periods have been found for 18 Cepheids ranging from 9d.67 to 126d.9. Period-luminosity relations are shown with both mean V and mean B magnitudes plotted against log period. A comparison is made with the Cepheid variables of the Large Magellanic Cloud. An absorption-corrected distance modulus of 26m.09±0m.2 is derived for NGC 300. This corresponds to a linear distance of 1.65±0.15 Mpc. |
