Abstract | Near-infrared measurements of five Cepheids in the galaxy NGC 2403, which is thought to be a member of the M81 Group, have been obtained. Application of the J band period-luminosity relation yields a distance modulus of 28.15 + or - 0.20 assuming a foreground reddening of 0.06 mag. This value is approximately 0.5 mag larger than that derived by Tammann and Sandage (1968) from blue observations, and is over 1.5 mag larger than Madore (1976) derived using a reddening-free formulation of the P-L relation which incorporated their blue and visual measurements. The absolute visual magnitudes of the brightest red supergiant irregular variables in NGC 2403 are approximately the same as those in the Galaxy when the new distance is used. |
