Abstract | An optical and H I study has been made of four dwarf galaxies near NGC 1023. Single-beam and aperture-synthesis data are given for the H I emission from all four galaxies and 4-m prime-focus plates have been taken of the field. Photoelectric photometry and intensified image-dissector-scanner spectral observations have been made of three of the objects. Knots are seen in each of the dwarfs; these could be supergiants at the plate limit. The spectrum of galaxy B indicates that it has a substantial stellar component with an age of less than about one-billion yr. Galaxy C shows emission features which imply that it contains star-forming regions less than about 7-million yr old. These results are suggestive of star bursts on a small scale. The integrated properties of the dwarf galaxies (M/H/, M/T/, L) are continuous with those of more luminous galaxies. The ratios M(H)/L and M(H)/M(T) increase logarithmically over the range M(B) = -20.5 to -13.0. M(T)/L does not change significantly over this range. |
