Abstract | Synthesis observations of H I in the active S0 galaxy NGC 3998 show that the gas is in a polar ring, inclined about 80° to the optical major axis. The position angle of the ionized gas in the inner galaxy is intermediate between those of H I and the light, suggesting differential precession of the gas structure. Weak extensions on the radio continuum emission from the nucleus are roughly perpendicular to the inner gas distribution. The circular velocity derived from the H I is normal for a galaxy of this luminosity; however, the ratio of central bulge velocity dispersion to circular velocity is anomalously high. This, and the extreme central light concentration, suggest that the galaxy contains a central massive object. |
