Abstract | Observations of the distribution and motions of H I in the giant Sc galaxy UGC 2885 confirm that it is an extremely regular and symmetric system. Spiral structure is clearly present in H I, corresponding closely to that seen in the optical. Analysis of the velocity data results in a rotation curve which agrees with the optical results. The authors present a simple interpretation for the observed spiral structure and rotation curve in terms of a single dominant two-armed spiral mode. The extent of the spiral arms indicates a corotation radius of approximately 45 kpc, with the spiral wave extending from the inner Lindblad resonance through corotation to the outer Lindblad resonance. |
