Abstract | MKW 10 is a poor cluster of galaxies containing nine galaxies with mpg ≤ 15.5, five of which appear to form a compact subsystem. In this paper, H I line observations of the galaxies in MKW 10 are presented along with observations of spiral galaxies that lie within 1°.5 of the group. The physical compactness of the subsystem is analyzed by examining the observable effects of tidal interactions and collisions on the optical and H I properties of the spiral galaxies in the group. The dynamical stability of MKW 10 and of a larger (≡3° in diameter) feature, which includes this group, is investigated. The time scale of dynamical friction and the expected collision rate are estimated and used to predict the degree of dynamical evolution that may have occurred in the group. |
