| Abstract | The Hubble constant, which defines the size and age of the universe, remains substantially uncertain. Attention is presently given to an improved distance to the Virgo Cluster obtained by means of the 1.05-micron luminosity-H I width relation of spirals. In order to improve the absolute calibration of the relation, accurate distances to the nearby SMC, LMC, N6822, SEX A and N300 galaxies have also been obtained, on the basis of the near-IR P-L relation of the Cepheids. A value for the global Hubble constant of 67 + or 4 km/sec per Mpc is obtained. |
