Abstract | 25 reliable candidates for globular clusters were detected in a radius of 13arcmin around the galaxy NGC 253 in the Sculptor group. 3 candidates are blue clusters and 4 are redder than the globular clusters in our galaxy. The spatial distribution of these clusters follows the D1/4 law. A study of the appearance of the globular clusters at large (over 1 Mpc) distances is carried out using the new cluster size classification. A revised distance of 2.88 Mpc for NGC 253 is proposed. As a by-product the field stars luminosity function and the B-V distribution are presented and compared with the model predictions. Similar results are presented for field galaxies. The total number of clusters is evaluated at 80±42. A comparison with other known systems in spiral galaxies gives a simple law for the frequency coefficient in spirals: S = 4.6 (KI-0.1). The number of clusters per unit luminosity of the halo component appears to be constant for spiral galaxies of all types ranging from Sa to Sc. |
