Abstract | The authors present results from H I synthesis observations and optical surface photometry of four dwarf irregular galaxies within the Virgo Cluster. H I distributions and rotation curves have been calculated for the four galaxies. One galaxy shows strong evidence that it is presently falling into the Virgo Cluster core and being stripped. Overall, the results support the proposal of Bothun et al. (1985) that the dwarf irregular population is presently outside of the dense core. Three of the galaxies suggest evidence for dark matter in small gravitational systems (luminous mass ≡108M_sun;). From rotation curve analysis the authors derive total M/L ratios of order 5 to 10. |
