Abstract | The crucial importance of Cepheids as distance indicators in both galactic and extragalactic research has long been recognized. At the present time, for instance, they appear to be the most satisfactory indicators of relative and absolute distances to nearby galaxies and to be the foundation for extensions of the distance scale to cosmologically important distances. The authors have attempted in this review to give a detailed assessment of the current situation, taking into account the very considerable improvements on both the observational and the theoretical side since earlier studies. |
