Abstract | During 15 nights of observations in 1986 March and April the authors have detected nine novae in Virgo cluster elliptical galaxies. From six novae with reasonably well-observed light curves it is found that the distance modulus of the Virgo cluster is 6.8±0.4 (estimated error) larger than that of M31. Using a distance modulus of 24.65±0.15 for M31 then gives a Virgo cluster distance of D = 19.5±3.9 Mpc. With a cosmological redshift of 1336±54 km s-1 for the Virgo cluster this yields a value H0 = 69±14 km s-1 Mpc-1 for the Hubble parameter. |
