| Abstract | Near-infrared H-band observations of two long-period Cepheids in the southern spiral galaxy NGC 300 are presented. A formal near-infrared H-band distance modulus of 26.35±0.25 mag is derived (for a true LMC distance modulus of 18.55 mag), corresponding to a distance of 1.9 Mpc. An appraisal of the previously available optical data on the NGC 300 Cepheids is given, and various uncertainties in the fitting procedure to obtain distances are discussed. The present uncertainty in the true modulus of NGC 300 is probably as high as ± 0.35 mag. Finally, astrometric positions are given for all the known Cepheids in NGC 300. |
