Abstract | CCD photometry of the RR Lyrae variables in the LMC cluster NGC 1786 gives a true distance modulus for the LMC of 18.44 +/- 0.05 mag if = 0.6, a result almost identical to that found from the NGC 2210 variables (18.42 +/- 0.06 mag), and consistent with the revised Cepheid distance modulus for the LMC (18.47 +/- 0.15 mag). The RR Lyrae period-amplitude relation suggests that NGC 1786, with [Fe/H] ~ -2.3, is more metal poor than NGC 2210 by 0.4 dex. |
