Abstract | H I measurements were made of three giant elliptical galaxies that have X-ray cooling flows; the 305 m Arecibo telescope was used. In NGC 4406, H I was detected in the center and along the major and minor axis; the total detected mass is 1.5 x 10^8^ M_sun_. The H I is centrally peaked and is not rotationally supported, properties expected in the cooling flow picture. The galaxies NGC 4472 and NGC 5846 were not detected and have upper limits of 1.3 x 10^7^ M_sun_ and 5.1 x 10^7^ M_sun_. The failure to detect H I in these objects may imply that the H I is opaque and with a small filling factor, or that the theoretical picture is more complicated than originally believed. |
