Abstract | An HI survey of late-type galaxies was undertaken in the Southern Hemisphere, in order to complete the Northern Survey of such objects made at Arecibo and at Green Bank. The first part of this survey, the results of which are published here, was concluded at the Nancay radio telescope between 1985 and 1988. It covers large galaxies selected from the SGC catalogue (Corwin et al, 1985), with declination, between, -17^deg^ and -38^deg^. 311 galaxies were observed and 245 detected. The non-detections are mainly very low surface brightness magellanic irregulars. This material will be used in a subsequent paper, together with its extension to smaller galaxies selected from the ESO catalogue, to establish distance criteria for late-type galaxies, and their distribution compared to that of more luminous spirals. |
