Abstract | The first planetary nebulae have been discovered in the late-type spiral galaxy NGC 3109 from CFHT images in the light of [O III] λ 5007 and Hα. From their luminosities, the best estimate of the distance modulus is 25.96^+0.1^_-0.4_ mag (1.6 Mpc), with 26.17+/-0.37 mag(1.71+/-0.4 Mpc) being a hard upper limit. A consideration of all other distance estimates for NGC 3109 indicates that 26.0 +/- 0.4 mag is the best estimate for the true distance modulus. Compared to other galaxies, the number of planetary nebulae found per unit luminosity is anomalously high. |
