Abstract | A new large-format infrared array was used to measure the surface brigtness fluctuations (SBFs) at 2.1 microns in M31 and M32 and in the nearby giant elliptical galaxy Maffei 1. From M31 observations, the K-prime-band fluctuation absolute magnitude was calibrated assuming M31 is 0.77 Mpc distant. The K-prime SBF of M32 was also measured, and a significant difference was found between the apparent fluctuation magnitudes of M31 and M32; M32 is brighter than M31 by 0.26 mag. Possible interpretations of this finding are examined. Determinations of the distance to Maffei 1 are presented. |
